Sukumar Ray, his father, died the same year. Manik who was bit more than 2 had no memory of his father. Suprabha Roy took her son Manik and went to live with her younger brother Prasanta Kumar Das in his rented house in the Bhawanipur area of South Calcutta. Manik grew up with his cousins. He was educated in the Ballygunge Government High School followed by his graduation from the Presidency College. From very young age he wanted to be a film maker and had learned to take snapshots at a tender age once when he had taken the photograph of his cousin, making her stand with her back to the sun, the photograph was printed black but Manik boasted about this saying, “just see how I can make a silhouette”.
