Fifty Shades of Grey is a book by British writer E. L. James. This is the first book in a series of three. The story revolves around the two protagonists - Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey. The story is set in Seattle.
Anastasia Steele is a young literature graduate who is fresh out of college. She meets the young entrepreneur and billionaire Christian Grey for an interview, and finds herself irresistibly attracted towards him.
Anastasia is inexperienced and innocent, while Christian Grey is a man of immense wealth and power. He is manipulative and dominating. Anastasia tries to put him out of her mind, but he turns up at her workplace and asks her out for a date. They gradually embark on a passionate relationship that reveals Anastasia’s own desires as well as dark secrets about Grey’s personality and his past.
As she explores his past, Anastasia understands his need to be in control of everything and everyone. His desires border on sadism and bondage, and he even gets her to sign a non-disclosure agreement and a contract that provides him full control over her life. The book then goes on to describe what happens to their relationship.
The story started as fan fiction, based on characters from the Twilight series. Because of its explicit sexual content, the author had to remove the story from the fan fiction website. She then changed the names of the main characters and developed the story into an erotic novel.
