India was fully brought under British rule during the 19th century. Yet there were a number of attempts to overthrow the British, large and small, in different parts of the country. At the turn of the 19th century, educated youth took to armed uprisings, planned secretly, for liberation from foreign rule. Rash Behari Bose was one of the great leaders who planned and executed such revolutionary activities. He was expelled from school for outspoken patriotism. As a youth he joined government service but secretly played a leading role in many armed attempts against British rule. He was constantly hunted by the police but evaded them for a long time. Finally, in disguise, he migrated to Japan, settled there and worked for India's independence. During the Second World War, he organized an Indian army to fight against the British of which he gave charge to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose later.
